ReelTrack

Portable SMD Electronic Components Counter

Similar projects worth following
ReelTrack is an ultra-portable tool for anyone working with surface-mount components. Whether you’re managing inventory, kitting parts, or verifying stock at a surplus sale, this device is versatile enough for efficient component counting. It is the perfect solution for most reel-packed components, finds applications both in small hobbyist workshops and large-scale automatic assembly line manufacturing.

Device has a durable and pocket-sized case, making it easy to carry around the warehouse. No moving parts reduce wear and tear over time. It uses IR sensors to count parts as quickly as you can pull them through.

  • Tape width 8, 12, 16 mm
  • Adjustable Component Intervals 2, 4, 8, 12, 16 mm
  • Supported component size 0201, 0402, 0603, 0805, 1210, etc.
  • Max count speed 1 m/s
  • Count 0 to 9999 pcs
  • Tolerance +/- 2 pcs

Compatible with plastic and paper carrier tapes ranging from 8 mm to 16 mm wide. When you work with automatic pick and place machines, you know that it is essential to leave empty tails for an easy feeder loading process. If you cut it out, the operator will stick special SMT cover tape extenders, which add extra costs to your assembly price.

User-friendly OLED Display helps you choose the necessary setup.

  • Pitch ruler

A useful feature to help measure the component's pitch was added. A small ruler indicator representing the pitch between the components helps to choose the correct one

  • How it started...

We have about 200 unique components used in the production, and whenever it was necessary to prepare components for SMT assembly was a nightmare to manually calculate all the components needed by the BOM. Yes, you may measure the length of the tape, divide it by the pitch... but if you need like 2300 of 0402 12k resistors - better to use something faster than the ruler.

So in a few days of coding and soldering, the prototype was ready:

It can only work with 8m tapes with different pitches.

In the next revision, an adjustable slider was added for multiple tape widths. But the general principle remained the same.

Hey - any plans to open source schematics or design files? Even in partial form it would be helpful for others trying to build on your work. Understandable if no if you're trying to sell these at some point, but would love to see it at a bit lower of a price point than the [BeanCounter](https://www.crowdsupply.com/great-big-factory/beancounter)
